Traditional banks, cooperatives, neobanks and online platforms. Compare fees, savings, mortgages and cards in CHF.
This comparison puts 8 banks in Switzerland side by side, among them UBS, PostFinance, Raiffeisen, Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB). They belong to different families, branch banks, cooperative banks, neobanks, online banks, and that distinction explains most of the pricing differences: a branch bank charges for the account and the branch network, an online bank rarely charges for the account but sends you to the phone, and a neobank costs almost nothing and almost never lends. The table compares account fees, the debit card, overdraft, savings, mortgages, foreign transaction costs and mobile payment, line by line and without an overall score, because an average hides exactly what matters to you. Dedicated offers are broken out for students, youth, premium and business, because the account that suits a student on no income is rarely the one that suits a business.

UBS: global wealth management leader, key4 Platinum with Priority Pass. ZKB: cantonal wealth management, state guarantee.
For a fee-free account: neon free, ZKB Banking or UBS key4 in their CHF 0 versions. For mortgages: Raiffeisen or ZKB. For wealth management: UBS. The right answer depends on your profile: a neobank covers everyday payments, while a cantonal or major bank often remains essential for a mortgage.
Pillar 3a is Switzerland's private pension savings, tax-deductible up to an annual cap set by the federal government. ZKB Frankly, Swissquote and Yuh offer equity or ETF-based 3a solutions with low fees. The money stays locked until five years before retirement age, apart from legal exceptions such as buying a main home, leaving Switzerland for good or becoming self-employed.
TWINT is Switzerland's mobile payment system (QR code, P2P, online shopping). All major banks (UBS, PostFinance, Raiffeisen, ZKB, Migros Bank) and neobanks (neon, Yuh) integrate TWINT in their app. The app links straight to your bank account and works without a card: it has become the usual way to split a bill, pay a tradesperson or feed a parking meter.
Yes, esisuisse protects deposits up to CHF 100,000 per depositor per bank. Cantonal banks (ZKB, BCGE, BCV) additionally benefit from a cantonal state guarantee covering all deposits. The scheme promises quick payout but is capped at sector level, so spreading a large balance across several institutions remains the only full protection above that amount.
neon: four plans from CHF 0 to 15 a month, savings from 0.38% to 0.45%, cash withdrawals from 1.5% to free depending on plan. Yuh: built-in investing (stocks, ETFs, crypto), 0.95% FX fee. CSX, Credit Suisse's former digital offer, disappeared with the integration into UBS. Compare the hidden costs too: withdrawals, replacement cards and currency conversion.
Cantonal banks (ZKB, BCV, BCGE, etc.) are owned by cantons and benefit from a state guarantee. They often offer the best mortgage rates, AAA rating and maximum stability. That guarantee does not cover every cantonal bank, however: a few cantons have removed or limited it, so check an institution's status before placing a large sum with it.
Neobanks Neon and Yuh accept Swiss residents with B or C permits. Traditional banks (UBS, Raiffeisen, ZKB) also accept cross-border workers (G permit) with ID and proof of address. Non-resident cross-border workers often face higher account fees or an outright refusal, as banks apply strict cross-border tax compliance rules.
There is no automatic bank switching service in Switzerland (unlike the EU). You must manually transfer your LSV/DD, standing orders and inform employers/insurers of your new IBAN. Neobanks (neon, Yuh) allow opening from the app. Plan the changeover over two or three months, keeping both accounts open until every salary payment, standing order and direct debit has been confirmed on the new one.
The Swiss banking market is one of the world's most renowned for its stability. Since taking over Credit Suisse in 2023 and integrating its clients, UBS dominates the market alongside cantonal banks (most guaranteed by their canton), Raiffeisen (cooperative group) and PostFinance (Swiss Post subsidiary). FINMA (Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority) oversees the sector. The esisuisse system protects deposits up to CHF 100,000 per client per bank.
Switzerland has a very high number of banks relative to its population. Cantonal banks play a central role: most are guaranteed by their canton and often offer good terms to local residents. Zurich Cantonal Bank (ZKB) is the largest. With the SNB policy rate at 0% since 20 June 2025, savings accounts pay little: 0.05% at PostFinance and Migros Bank, up to 0.45% at neon. EUR/CHF conversion fees remain a concern for cross-border commuters.
Yuh (Swissquote/PostFinance partnership) and neon are the two leading Swiss neobanks: neon offers four plans from CHF 0 to 15 a month, Yuh an account with built-in investing and a 0.95% FX fee. Swissquote is the go-to online bank for investing (stocks, ETFs, crypto). Revolut and Wise are widely used by cross-border commuters for EUR/CHF conversions. UBS has grouped its core offer in key4, with a CHF 0 plan, and ZKB offers fee-free ZKB Banking.
Swiss mortgages (Hypothek) work differently from the French model: Swiss residents rarely repay the full principal and keep long-term mortgage debt (indirect amortisation through pillar 3a). In August 2026, new mortgages averaged 1.19% for SARON loans, 1.76% for 5 years and 2.03% for 10 years (SNB); PostFinance advertises 10-year fixed from 1.95%. Banks require a minimum 20% down payment and check that imputed costs do not exceed one third of gross income. Pillar 3a allows tax-deductible saving, and savings accounts pay 0% to 0.45% in CHF.
For a Swiss resident, your cantonal bank often offers good local terms (mortgages, cantonal guarantee). For the lowest fees, neon free, ZKB Banking and UBS key4 offer CHF 0 plans. Cross-border commuters compare Revolut or Wise for EUR/CHF conversions. For investing, Swissquote and Yuh are the references. For a mortgage, a mortgage broker can compare offers from banks and insurers.
