Traditional banks, online banks, neobanks and cooperatives. Compare fees, savings, home loans and cards in AUD.
This comparison puts 10 banks in Australia side by side, among them Commonwealth Bank (CBA), Westpac, ANZ, NAB. They belong to different families, branch banks, online banks, neobanks, cooperative banks, and that distinction explains most of the pricing differences: a branch bank charges for the account and the branch network, an online bank rarely charges for the account but sends you to the phone, and a neobank costs almost nothing and almost never lends. The table compares account fees, the debit card, overdraft, savings, mortgages, foreign transaction costs and mobile payment, line by line and without an overall score, because an average hides exactly what matters to you. Dedicated offers are broken out for students, youth, premium and business, because the account that suits a student on no income is rarely the one that suits a business.

For savings: Ubank (5.35% from 6 October 2026), BOQ Future Saver (up to 5.80% on A$50,000) or ING (up to 5.50%). For branch network: Commonwealth Bank or Westpac. For travel: Macquarie. Check the conditions attached to the headline rates above all: most Australian savings accounts only pay the bonus rate if you deposit a minimum each month or grow the balance.
Yes, the Australian Government's Financial Claims Scheme (FCS) protects up to A$250,000 per depositor per authorised deposit-taking institution (ADI). This covers the Big 4 as well as all APRA-regulated banks. The guarantee applies per depositor and per ADI licence, so two brands owned by the same authorised group share a single cap, worth checking before spreading large savings.
The Big 4 are Australia's four largest banks: Commonwealth Bank (CBA), Westpac, ANZ and NAB. They hold most of the country's deposits and home loans. Their branch and ATM network remains the densest, but their base savings rates are low (0.10% at Westpac without bonus) and the bonus rate requires monthly conditions.
Macquarie charges no international fees on purchases or at overseas ATMs, and Up charges no fees abroad. Westpac charges 3% on foreign currency transactions. Also decline the conversion offered by overseas terminals: paying in the local currency avoids a markup charged by the merchant rather than by your bank.
BOQ Future Saver pays up to 5.80% on A$50,000, ING Savings Maximiser up to 5.50% on A$100,000, Ubank will pay 5.35% from 6 October 2026 (6.10% for new customers), Macquarie 5.00% up to A$250,000 and NAB Reward Saver up to 4.99%. The RBA cash rate has been 4.60% since 30 September 2026. These rates almost always include a conditional bonus: a single month without a deposit drops the return to the base rate (0.01% at ING, 0.05% at BOQ).
Yes, the Big 4 allow you to open an account before arriving (up to 12 months prior). You'll need your passport and a valid visa. After 6 weeks in Australia, additional identification is required (100 points of ID). You will still need to complete identity checks in person at a branch within a set period after arriving, and to provide a Tax File Number to avoid withholding tax on interest.
It's an identity verification system where each document is worth a certain number of points: passport (70 pts), driver's licence (40 pts), Medicare card (25 pts), etc. You need to total 100 points to open an account in-branch. A passport usually counts for seventy points and a driving licence for forty, so most newcomers combine both, while a birth certificate or a bank statement adds the remainder.
The Big 4 offer full in-branch service. Macquarie and Ubank offer online loans, ING Orange Advantage a 100% offset account, Bendigo Bank a community model with local advice. A licensed broker compares several lenders free of charge and knows each one's criteria, which matters when income is irregular or the deposit is limited.
The Australian banking market is dominated by the Big Four – Commonwealth Bank (CBA), Westpac, ANZ and NAB – which hold most of the country's deposits. APRA (Australian Prudential Regulation Authority) oversees banking stability, while ASIC (Australian Securities and Investments Commission) protects consumers. The Financial Claims Scheme (FCS) guarantees deposits up to AUD 250,000 per person per institution.
Australia is one of the world's most advanced markets for contactless payments. Osko and PayID enable real-time transfers between banks via the New Payments Platform (NPP). The Big Four offer extensive branch and ATM networks; their everyday accounts charge AUD 4 to 5 a month, waived with AUD 2,000 in monthly deposits or by age (under 30 at CBA, under 41 at Westpac). Regional banks (Bendigo Bank, Bank of Queensland) and credit unions often offer better terms. Macquarie Bank has become a popular digital alternative, with no Macquarie fees and an interest-paying transaction account.
Up Bank (backed by Bendigo Bank) is a 100% mobile neobank with budgeting tools (Savers) and no Up fees abroad. ING Australia pairs the Orange Everyday account with the Savings Maximiser (up to 5.50%). Macquarie offers a transaction account paying 2.75% and savings at 5.00%, Ubank bonus savings up to AUD 1M. Revolut and Wise are used by expats and travelers for low-cost international transfers. Buy now, pay later (Afterpay, Zip) is now regulated as credit.
The Australian mortgage market (home loan) offers variable and fixed rates: in July 2026, new owner-occupier loans averaged 6.2% variable, 6.3% fixed up to 3 years and 6.9% beyond (RBA), and the cash rate rose to 4.60% on 30 September 2026. Loans at 80% LVR (Loan-to-Value Ratio) avoid LMI (Lenders Mortgage Insurance), an expensive insurance required above that. First home buyer grants vary by state. Superannuation, the mandatory retirement system, collects 12% of gross salary. Bonus savings accounts pay about 5% to 5.8% with conditions.
For an Australian resident, Macquarie or Up offer everyday accounts with no fees abroad. For savings, compare Ubank, BOQ, ING and Macquarie, taking bonus conditions into account. For a mortgage, consult a mortgage broker (free, paid by the bank). For super, check your fund's fees and performance with the ATO's YourSuper tool. Newcomers can open a Big 4 account before arriving. Use Osko or PayID for instant transfers.
