Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Revolut. Compare annual fees, travel insurance, purchase protection and find the ideal card for Italy.
This comparison examines 9 cards in Italy, among them Fineco Carta di debito, Revolut Standard, Revolut Plus, Carta di Credito Verde Amex, across the Mastercard, Revolut, American Express networks. Three things genuinely separate one card from another, and the annual fee is only the first: next come the bundled insurances, trip cancellation, medical cover abroad, baggage, purchase protection, whose value often exceeds the fee as soon as you travel, and foreign exchange charges, which quietly cost 2 to 3 per cent of every purchase in another currency with traditional issuers and nothing at all with the neobanks. Payment and withdrawal limits matter too, and they are negotiable. The table compares them line by line, without an overall score: the right card for a frequent traveller is not the right card for someone who rarely leaves home. Anyone going abroad twice a year usually saves more with a no-foreign-fee card than a premium card's insurance ever returns in claims.

Our recommendations based on your usage profile in Italy.
You travel often and want comprehensive travel insurance.
Worldwide travel insurance for the whole family and up to €300 of dining credit, for €70 a month. Revolut Metal (€15.99/month): overseas medical insurance, unlimited weekday exchange and €800 of free withdrawals a month.
You want a free card for everyday use and travel.
Free, fee-free weekday exchange up to €1,000 a month, €200 or 5 free withdrawals a month. Fineco: free debit card for under-30s, commission-free purchases up to €5,000 a month.
You pay a lot by card and want to earn points.
Free in year one then €20 a month, Membership Rewards and up to €125 welcome discount. The Verde (€7/month after year one) protects purchases for 90 days. Beware of revolving credit: 24.19% APR (Oro) and 19.42% (Verde).
You want to share a card's benefits with your family.
€9.99 a month, unlimited weekday exchange, €400 of free withdrawals a month and two kids' accounts with a co-admin. Platino: family travel insurance and supplementary cards included (1 Platino, up to 4 Oro).
A carta di debito (often on the BANCOMAT circuit) charges the account immediately. A carta di credito groups spending and debits it the following month (charge) or in instalments with interest (revolving). At American Express, the revolving APR ranges from 19.42% (Verde) to 24.19% (Oro).
Collected in October 2026: Verde free in year one then €7 a month, Oro free in year one then €20 a month, Platino €70 a month. Welcome offers (up to €125 off) ran from 8 September to 6 October 2026.
Merchants must accept electronic payments, but not necessarily every network. Hotels, large retailers and online shops often take Amex; at small shops, carry a Visa, Mastercard or BANCOMAT card.
Standard free, Plus €3.99, Premium €9.99, Metal €15.99 and Ultra €55 a month. Fee-free weekday exchange up to €1,000 (Standard) or €3,000 (Plus) a month, unlimited above; weekend markup of 1% or 0.5%. Free withdrawals from €200 to €2,000 a month, then 2% (min €1).
It is a €34.20 annual tax on current accounts with an average balance above €5,000. It depends on the account the card is linked to, not on the card itself.
Always pay in the local currency and decline the conversion offered by the terminal or ATM (dynamic currency conversion), whose rate is usually worse than your card's.
Yes, up to €100,000 per depositor per bank. The FITD covers Italian banks; Revolut falls under the Lithuanian scheme, with the same ceiling.
The Italian card market stands out for the BANCOMAT circuit (PagoBancomat), the national network Italian banks use for withdrawals and debit payments. Visa and Mastercard dominate credit cards, Nexi is the country's main payment processor, and Poste Italiane's Postepay, a reloadable prepaid card, remains widespread.
Italy long relied heavily on cash, but the obligation for merchants to accept electronic payments has sped up the shift to cards. Intesa Sanpaolo and UniCredit, the two largest banks, issue Visa and Mastercard cards. Online banks (Fineco) and neobanks (Revolut, N26, Hype) attract younger customers with free or low-cost cards.
Italian cards fall into carte di debito (BANCOMAT, immediate debit), carte di credito (Visa, Mastercard or American Express, charge or revolving) and carte prepagate (Postepay, Hype). Postepay Evolution combines an IBAN with a prepaid card, handy for online shopping. Comprehensive travel insurance is reserved for high-end cards (Carta Platino Amex, Revolut Metal and Ultra). Contactless payment is widely used.
Italian merchants have had to accept electronic payments since 2022, with penalties for refusing. Interchange fees follow EU rules (0.2% debit, 0.3% credit). Withdrawals are often free within your bank's network; elsewhere fees depend on each bank's price list (at Fineco, free on BANCOMAT above €99). The FITD protects deposits up to €100,000. The €34.20 annual imposta di bollo applies to accounts with an average balance above €5,000.
For everyday use in Italy, a BANCOMAT debit card linked to your account is the most practical. For travel outside the eurozone, Revolut applies its rate without a fee on weekdays within plan limits. To earn points, American Express cards (Verde, Oro) are free in year one. Revolving credit cards carry high APRs (up to 24.19% on the Carta Oro): pay the balance every month.
* Fees collected in October 2026 from issuers' official pages (Fineco, American Express, Revolut). They may change: check with the issuer before applying. Supervised by Banca d'Italia. Deposits protected up to €100,000 (FITD).
