Visa, Mastercard and American Express: nine real cards from Desjardins, Scotiabank, Home Trust and Amex. Compare annual fees, interest rates, insurance, cashback and foreign exchange fees.
This comparison examines 9 cards in Canada, among them Desjardins Remises Visa, Desjardins Remises Mastercard, Home Trust Preferred Visa, Desjardins Odyssée Or Visa, across the Visa, Mastercard, American Express networks. Three things genuinely separate one card from another, and the annual fee is only the first: next come the bundled insurances, trip cancellation, medical cover abroad, baggage, purchase protection, whose value often exceeds the fee as soon as you travel, and foreign exchange charges, which quietly cost 2 to 3 per cent of every purchase in another currency with traditional issuers and nothing at all with the neobanks. Payment and withdrawal limits matter too, and they are negotiable. The table compares them line by line, without an overall score: the right card for a frequent traveller is not the right card for someone who rarely leaves home. Anyone going abroad twice a year usually saves more with a no-foreign-fee card than a premium card's insurance ever returns in claims.

Our recommendations based on your usage profile.
You travel often and want solid insurance, lounge access and concierge service.
Amex Platinum ($799/yr): 1,550+ lounges, annual credits of $200 for dining and $200 for travel, emergency medical up to $5M per person, $2,500/person cancellation. Passport Visa Infinite ($150/yr): 0% foreign transaction fee, 6 lounge visits per year, Visa Infinite concierge.
You want a no-annual-fee card with the essentials for everyday use.
Home Trust: $0 annual fee, no foreign exchange fees, 1% uncapped cash back (excluding foreign transactions), but not available in Quebec. Desjardins Cash Back Visa: $0, up to 2% in some categories and travel insurance for trips of up to 3 days.
You want to maximize points or cashback on your everyday Canadian spending.
Cash Back World Elite ($100/yr): up to 4% on groceries, 3% on dining, 1% elsewhere, Mastercard Travel Pass lounge access. Amex Gold Rewards ($250/yr): 2 points per dollar on travel, gas, grocery and drugstore purchases, $100 annual travel credit.
You travel to the US or abroad regularly and want to avoid conversion fees.
Both cards charge no foreign transaction fee, versus 2.5% at Desjardins and Amex. The Passport Visa Infinite adds travel insurance (emergency medical up to $2M) and 6 lounge visits a year; Home Trust has no annual fee but no travel insurance.
In terms of acceptance in Canada, Visa and Mastercard are nearly identical: both are accepted almost everywhere. Differences lie in insurance and rewards, which vary mainly by card issuer (Desjardins, Scotiabank, TD, CIBC, BMO, RBC). The real difference lies in the issuing bank rather than the network: annual fee, rewards structure, insurance cover and income requirements are all set by the bank, so compare those first.
Interac is Canada's debit payment network. Unlike many countries, Canadians heavily use Interac debit cards for daily purchases and Interac e-Transfer for person-to-person payments. All Canadian banks support Interac. Interac e-Transfer also lets you send money by email or phone number from the banking app, usually free on a chequing account and settled within minutes.
American Express generally charges merchants higher acceptance fees than Visa and Mastercard. Some small shops, restaurants and independent grocers therefore refuse Amex, and Costco does not take it in Canada. However, major chains, hotels and online retailers generally accept it. Acceptance is improving in large chains, airlines and hotels, but small independents often decline it, so an Amex works best as a second card rather than the only one.
Deposits are protected by CDIC (Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation) up to CA$100,000 per eligible deposit category, per member institution; in Quebec, Desjardins caisse deposits fall under the Autorité des marchés financiers. For credit cards, Visa's zero liability policy protects cardholders against fraudulent purchases reported promptly. Credit card balances, by contrast, are not deposits and carry no such protection; what protects the holder there is the chargeback process and the zero-liability rule for fraudulent transactions.
Cashback is simpler and offers guaranteed value: from 0.5% to 4% by category on Desjardins Cash Back cards, 1% uncapped on the Home Trust Preferred Visa. Points (Aeroplan, Scene+, Membership Rewards) can offer more value if redeemed for flights or stays, but their value varies. If you travel frequently, points are often more rewarding. Points can be worth more than cashback when transferred to an airline partner, but they expire and lose value if redeemed through a merchandise catalogue, so match the card to your habits.
Desjardins charges 2.5% on every foreign currency purchase (USD, EUR, etc.), and Amex applies the same rate. The Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite ($150/yr) and the Home Trust Preferred Visa (no annual fee, not available in Quebec) charge no foreign transaction fee. Paying in the local currency rather than accepting the terminal's conversion avoids a further markup.
Some banks waive the fee in the first year or with a banking package: the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite, for example, has no annual fee with the Ultimate Package. No-annual-fee cards like the Desjardins Cash Back Visa or the Home Trust Preferred Visa offer cashback at no cost. Welcome bonuses can also offset annual fees. The waiver usually applies for the first year only, so check the renewal cost and whether the benefits you actually use justify keeping the card beyond that point.
In Canada, credit scores are managed by Equifax and TransUnion (score from 300 to 900). A good score (700+) makes it easier to get premium cards, mortgages and loans. Each card application triggers a credit inquiry that can temporarily lower your score.
The Canadian bank card market is dominated by the Big Five – RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, and CIBC – which issue the majority of the country's credit and debit cards. The Interac network, owned by Canadian financial institutions, is the national debit payment system: Interac Debit for in-store purchases and Interac e-Transfer for peer-to-peer transfers. Visa and Mastercard dominate credit cards, while American Express occupies a premium niche. Rewards programs Scene+ (Scotiabank), AIR MILES (BMO), and Aeroplan (TD/CIBC) are among the most generous in the world.
Revolving credit is widely used in Canada and rates are high: 20.9% on purchases at Desjardins, 20.99% on the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite and 21.99% at Amex and Home Trust, which is why paying the balance in full each month matters. Low-rate cards cost far less in interest: the Desjardins Flexi Visa, with no annual fee, charges 10.9% on purchases. Contactless (tap) payment is ubiquitous at merchants.
Canadian cards are divided into Interac debit cards (included with every chequing account), Visa/Mastercard/Amex credit cards, and prepaid cards. Premium credit cards (Visa Infinite, World Elite Mastercard) offer comprehensive travel insurance, airport lounge access, and higher reward rates: up to 4% on groceries with the Desjardins Cash Back World Elite, versus 0.5% outside bonus categories on the no-fee Cash Back Visa. Programs Scene+ (movies and travel), AIR MILES (everyday purchases), and Aeroplan (air travel) allow accumulating points at many partners.
Foreign transaction fees reach 2.5% at Desjardins and Amex, a significant cost for travelers. A few cards waive them: the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite ($150/yr) and the Home Trust Preferred Visa (no annual fee, not available in Quebec). The CDIC (Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation) protects deposits up to $100,000 per eligible category. The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) supervises federal banks.
To choose the best card in Canada, evaluate your habits: families will benefit from grocery-focused cards (up to 4% on the Desjardins Cash Back World Elite, 3 points per dollar at major grocery chains on the Passport Visa Infinite). Frequent travelers should look at travel insurance, lounge access and the absence of foreign exchange fees. For everyday no-fee use, the Desjardins Cash Back cards and the Home Trust Preferred Visa have no annual fee. Newcomers to Canada can start with a secured card to build their Canadian credit history.
