DBS and POSB, American Express and Revolut cards: compare annual fees, KrisFlyer miles, cashback and overseas costs to find the right card.
This comparison examines 10 cards in Singapore, among them DBS Chromo Card, POSB Everyday Card, Revolut Standard, DBS Altitude Visa Signature, across the Visa, Revolut, American Express networks. Three things genuinely separate one card from another, and the annual fee is only the first: next come the bundled insurances, trip cancellation, medical cover abroad, baggage, purchase protection, whose value often exceeds the fee as soon as you travel, and foreign exchange charges, which quietly cost 2 to 3 per cent of every purchase in another currency with traditional issuers and nothing at all with the neobanks. Payment and withdrawal limits matter too, and they are negotiable. The table compares them line by line, without an overall score: the right card for a frequent traveller is not the right card for someone who rarely leaves home. Anyone going abroad twice a year usually saves more with a no-foreign-fee card than a premium card's insurance ever returns in claims.

Cashback suits you if you want immediate savings (DBS Chromo, POSB Everyday). Miles are better value if you often fly Singapore Airlines or its partners (DBS Altitude, Amex Membership Rewards points). Check monthly cashback caps and minimum spend conditions.
Yes, Singapore-dollar deposits are insured up to S$100,000 per depositor per SDIC member bank.
Singapore's bank card market is one of the most sophisticated in Southeast Asia. The three major local banks – DBS, OCBC, and UOB – dominate the market, complemented by foreign banks (HSBC, Standard Chartered, Citibank) and digital neobanks. PayNow, the national instant payment system, enables free transfers via phone number or NRIC (identity card). NETS (Network for Electronic Transfers) is the local debit payment network, while GrabPay has become an essential mobile wallet through the Grab ecosystem.
Singapore is a global financial hub where credit cards are widespread, driven by rewards programmes: category cashback, air miles (KrisFlyer, Asia Miles) and convertible points. DBS is the country's largest bank; its Altitude card earns up to 2.2 miles per S$1 on foreign-currency spend. MAS rules require an annual income of at least S$30,000 to get a credit card.
Singapore cards fall into debit cards (NETS, Visa or Mastercard), credit cards (cashback or miles) and prepaid wallets (GrabPay, Singtel Dash). Cashback cards (DBS Chromo, POSB Everyday) pay back part of spending in selected categories. Miles cards (DBS Altitude) and Amex Membership Rewards points earn KrisFlyer miles for Singapore Airlines flights.
Annual fees range from nothing (DBS Chromo, waived for 5 years) to S$1,744 a year (Amex Platinum Card), and banks often agree to waive the fee on request. Most cards charge foreign transaction fees, except cards such as the DBS Chromo. Revolving interest rates are high: always pay the balance in full. SDIC insures deposits up to S$100,000 and MAS supervises the financial system.
For a Singapore resident, choose between cashback (immediate savings) and miles (if you often fly Singapore Airlines or its partners). A card with no FX fees such as the DBS Chromo or Revolut avoids foreign transaction fees when travelling. Frequent travellers can earn miles with the DBS Altitude. Use PayNow and NETS for everyday local payments.
* Fees collected in October 2026 from issuers' official pages (DBS, American Express, Revolut). They may change: check with the issuer before applying. Deposits insured by SDIC up to S$100,000. Supervised by MAS.
